This was my first foray into Kate Horan’s writing, and I must say I enjoyed this book On The Edge a lot. The story was addictive, easy to read, and fast paced. The subplots were complex enough to keep the book interesting and suspenseful, but simple enough to be read in a single sitting.
The book started with a punch with the main character Nel’s father dying and her being called home. A place she had left 16 years ago after the death / murder of her best friend Maddie, which had never been solved. To add to that, Nel was the last person to have seen her and had left town to escape the rumors and speculations.
Now, back in town, the rumors were starting up, but this time, Nel was ready to fight back. She decided to solve the mystery surrounding Maddie’s death. Teaming with love interest and local cop Jimmy, she soon managed to unfurl the hidden truths, all of them were most unexpected.
The short snappy chapters, that pulled me in and forced me to finish the book in one-go, were the best aspects in this book. I thought I would get a slack chapter after a high-intensity scene, but the author ensured that my attention was captured by something else.
I was most shocked by the reveal of the perp and the reasons behind the death of an innocent teen. Though, to be honest, I had another suspect in my mind. The small town secrets, the domestic drama, hidden violence behind closed doors all added another layer to the story.
The bonds between the other members of Nel’s family had heartwarming and harrowing moments, but they were also soaked in reality. Some of the characters like Sophie shocked me. Women can really be enterprising when desperation and determination entered the equation, can’t they?

What I Disliked
Desperate people do desperate things – This was the tag line of the book, and though I agreed to it, I didn’t find enough desperate people in the book. What I did find was a small town and a set of characters who led the book down the pages with their secrets and actions.
There were many characters who could have made good suspects, but the book didn’t focus on that. Where things could pack a punch, the author decided to forgo the suspense and moved toward domestic drama. Especially surrounding the ring. I had a complex theory in my mind, but the simplest of ways was used in that subplot.
I enjoyed the unexpected ending, surely didn’t expect that. But I thought the last page would make me fall down shocked, but that didn’t happen. The book, I would say, was a combination of domestic drama and suspense.
Would I recommend?
Yes. This was exactly a book that a thriller gal like me would like to read the whole year around. I loved the setting and the fast pace. Reading the chapters that pulled me in was the best part. I never knew real world existed in those few hours – the mark of an exciting story.
I was so happy reading this book that I promptly went and borrowed book 1 from my friend.
