Reading is usually my escape, my joy, my constant companion. But sometimes, even the most promising books can leave you feeling… well, nothing much at all. Over the past 10 days, I’ve torn through several books that had stellar reviews, gorgeous covers, and premises. These 6 disappointing books that made me click “buy now” faster than you can say “bestseller.” Yet here I am, feeling the literary equivalent of a shrug.
Before you spend your hard-earned money and precious time, let me walk you through these recent reads that didn’t quite hit the mark. And more importantly, explain why.

Chase Lovett Wants Me by Helena Hunting
Well, sex sells, and this book proves it. Apparently, that’s what the works of this author are about.
Most books have story with some sex, but this one had sex with some cringy story in it. Reminded me initially of THE HARDEST FALL by Ella Maise – that was super enjoyable – but only the barebones of it.
Most of the prose was of main characters having sex or her writing fanfic which had only sex. In between such scenes, there were lines of feel-good prose. Oh my, I don’t even have words at the moment to express my feelings because I wanted a story. But I was given erotica
And the steamy scenes were okay-ish. A novella it was, a fluffy piece, because apparently nobody really wants to write a full-length novel where plots had to be thought through carefully and emotions had to be embedded, when success could be had with writing just about sex and insta-love. Read it if you are in mood for steam.
The Last Trip by Kiersten Modglin
OMG. What do I say about this book? I read the acknowledgment because I wanted to know why this story was written in such a half-baked manner, and it was said there was an underlying message in this story about how women are treated in society. And that the ending was one of hope… Just a warning the main female character kills the male character, and there was no feeling of hope in the entire story.
Secondly, there were 2 naive women who were apparently students of said professor (male character) and allowed him to romance and do other non-professor things to them, and that was supposed to be suspense and thrill. One was induced to marriage and other, surrogacy. OMG. I didn’t even know why the professor wanted his own crappy genes be passed to the child. And the added characters just felt weird and forced.
I wouldn’t have minded this story if the writing had been powerful and full of conviction, but like the past few books, suspense was forced and negligible where it was inserted. And where was the atmosphere of thriller in the whole story?
I was left stunned, not in a good way.
In contrary to this, Love, Mom was a great thriller. Read my review here
OMG. What happened to this author? She used to be my favorite. Now she was all about telling me the story with pages and pages and pages of narrative without active scenes or emotions. Was an AI writing the book for her?
This book had so few active scenes that I felt sad the author was so disconnected with what a modern reader wanted. All she had to do was to convert all the narrations to conversations and emotions. Or send the manuscript to me to do that. sighhh…
Also, the audiobooks of this author were narrated by a male narrator which didn’t go In sync with the thoughts of female characters. Ah, the nuances were missing, but I suppose who needed nuances when you could ride the coattails of past fame?
If I spend money on a book, I better get at least a quarter of my money’s worth, n’est-ce pas?
Lost And Found Family by Jennifer Ryan
The book was sooo good in the first half. Kept me completely gripped to the secret and the storyline.
But once the hero admitted his feelings for the heroine, his dialogues were repetitive and almost the same in every single scene he was present.
And the heroine suddenly became this larger-than-life character who did it all from being a mother and spending time with her kids to coding and making video games, and charity, and running a horse ranch to making cupcakes and dinner and paying off accident victims and apparently bribing a doctor.
OMG. It became too much for me. I kept rolling my eyes and looking heavenward every time she did something and others fawned over her and the hero said I love you and I will look after you and there is no one quite like you.
Yes. There really couldn’t be anyone quite like her because she was fictional. *rolling my eyes so hard that I get a headache*
I didn’t like the second half. You might love it. Don’t go by my review.
PS – the hero is supposed to be a hotshot lawyer three days a week, but I rarely saw him working or going through his own cases and getting stressed while working those court arguments. Nope. Nada. Not a single scene with him working at court or on ranch, except for a wood-ax scene which was all for making the heroine ogle at his six-pack.
I found the book was way too long, and second half could be deleted/edited, keeping only some scenes. Sighh… Read this in 1 day.
Things We Never Say by Caitlin Weaver
A family drama of 3 women with secrets. Secrets and scandal were the cornerstone of this book. Furthermore, I loved the camaraderie that slowly developed over the pages, where the author gave them different roles and life circumstances.
But I was most disappointed by a character who was a lawyer yet went through the worst domestic abuse, knowing she could take steps to escape. Even until the end of the book, she couldn’t seem to stand up to her abuser. So, I felt bad that she couldn’t seem to find her strength in the entire book.
The tag line was great about three perfect families, but the secret was not as explosive as it was purported to be. Needless to say, this was one of my better reads as compared to the duds above.
I started this in the Holiday season but finished it this year. The main character Imogen had the worst mother, and that consequently affected all her relationships to the point that she made some imaginary stories about her imaginary family and dog.
A mistake led to her stay at the Christmas cottage, where she got to know the truth about her family unexpectedly. The book spent all the time in building up the confrontation and resolution that at the end, there were not many pages left to show the Christmas cheer.
The office where Imogen and the author spent a quarter of the book in and where the lies had spun originally was never mentioned at the end. Furthermore, I never got to know how the main character resolved all her problems at work and lead an authentic life.
Even though I usually loved a Sarah Morgan book, even so, I wished this was more complete to show me all aspects of the main character’s life.
